Gandalf, originally known as Olórin, is a wizard from Middle Earth, a prominent figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy works.
He first appears as Gandalf the Grey in *The Hobbit*, a benevolent and wise guide who encourages and assists Bilbo Baggins on his quest to reclaim treasure from the dragon Smaug. He is a member of the Istari order, sent to Middle Earth to aid the free peoples against the threat of Sauron.
